• Artist biography

A visual artist whose main means of expression are embroidery, engraving and textile media, Alma Bucciali lives and works in Alsace.

The daughter of engraver Rémy Bucciali, she discovered the world of drawing and printmaking at a very young age in the family workshop, where she learned the basics of line, color, and printing techniques. The various artists who frequented the workshop (such as Mitsuo Shiraishi, Tomi Ungerer, Raymond Waydelich, Alain Clément, and Gérard Titus Carmel) during this period shaped her vision, and their works would have a decisive influence on her subsequent work.

Later, she enrolled at the École Supérieure d'Art de Lorraine in Epinal, where she studied illustration and storytelling. During this time, she discovered Louise Bourgeois and Annette Messager, as well as Judith Butler, Françoise Héritier, and other leading figures of feminism. Her work took on a more politically engaged character, and she began to explore questions of gender and the demands of queer art. Drawing on personal symbolism found in cathedral bestiaries and medieval and Renaissance art, particularly that of Matthias Grünewald, her drawings became populated with hybrids and chimeras, figures that were part human, part animal. During this period, she created her first Guns, experimented with engraving, and, having seen the works of Sophie Lécuyer and Aurélie William Leveaux, decided to teach herself some embroidery techniques.

It is also presented at numerous fairs in Europe, such as Art Karlsruhe or the Affordable Art Fair in Stockholm.
