How to choose the perfect frame for your artwork?

Choosing a frame is not simply an aesthetic exercise; it's an act of enhancement and preservation. A well-thought-out frame enhances the artwork without overpowering it, while ensuring its protection over time. Each piece has its own specific requirements—a contemporary photograph, an abstract painting, an antique engraving, or a delicate watercolor are not framed in the same way. The type of support, the technique used, and the period of creation already influence the choice of material, glass, and frame style.
At Espace Soardi, we always begin by listening to the story of the artwork and its intended use: is it meant for a private residence? A public exhibition? A permanent or temporary display? The style of the frame then plays a crucial role: classic, contemporary, baroque, natural wood, colored wood, or aluminum – each aesthetic tells a story. The frame must engage in a dialogue with the artwork, but also with the space that houses it. A floater frame will bring a contemporary and minimalist touch to stretched canvases, while a gold leaf frame will be perfect for enhancing a period piece.
We also pay close attention to the type of glass used. Depending on the desired level of protection and the display conditions, we offer different types of glass: standard, anti-reflective Claryl, museum-quality glass with 99% UV protection, or acrylic plexiglass for sensitive formats or high-risk environments. This choice is often crucial for preserving the artwork from light, particularly UV rays, which cause fading. Mounting is also key: we use conservation techniques, natural adhesives, acid-free mats, and reversible fixings that meet museum standards. A good frame not only provides physical protection but also preserves the artwork's material and symbolic value.
Finally, custom framing is the only solution that guarantees an impeccable finish and a result perfectly suited to the framed object. At Espace Soardi, each frame is crafted in our workshop, with the exacting standards of artisanal techniques and the discerning eye of a professional conservator. We consider each artwork unique, and each frame a setting that must enhance it without betraying its essence. Choosing the right frame means respecting the artist, the artwork, and the emotion it evokes – and that is the very essence of our profession.
