Tips for choosing the right lighting for your framed artwork

Highlighting a work of art isn't just about making it visible; it's about bringing it to life, animating it, revealing its subtlest nuances, and preserving its brilliance over time. Yet, lighting is often overlooked in interior design and art installations. Poor lighting can dull colors, create distracting reflections, and even damage artworks. At Espace Soardi, we believe that lighting is an integral part of showcasing framed artwork, just as important as the frame or the glass itself. Here are our tips for making the right choices.

The first and most important rule is to avoid direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to UV rays is the primary cause of pigment discoloration, paper yellowing, and damage to sensitive materials. Even behind protective glass, a work of art must be kept out of direct natural light, or ideally in a space where the light intensity can be controlled.

When it comes to artificial lighting, adjustable LED spotlights are currently the most efficient solution. Unlike halogen or traditional light bulbs, LEDs emit neither excessive heat nor UV radiation, while still offering excellent light quality. Opt for a neutral color temperature (between 3000K and 4000K) to faithfully reproduce the colors of the artwork, without artificially "cooling" or "warming" it. Some models even have adjustable intensity, allowing you to adapt the lighting to the room's ambiance or the time of day.

The angle of illumination also plays a crucial role. A beam positioned at 30° to the artwork's vertical axis minimizes reflections while ensuring even light distribution. If you use protective glass, choose anti-reflective glass (such as Claryl or museum-quality glass) which eliminates unwanted mirrors and improves visual comfort. This type of glass, combined with soft, well-directed lighting, allows for a smooth viewing experience, free from light interference.

Finally, if you wish to highlight a specific artwork (painting, drawing, photograph), consider accent wall lights or adjustable track lighting, which offer both precision and flexibility. In galleries or contemporary interiors, this approach allows you to create an elegant, almost museum-like display, where each piece benefits from its own halo of light.

Properly lighting a work of art reveals its full visual richness while ensuring its preservation. At Espace Soardi, we support you in your exhibition projects, advising you not only on suitable framing but also on how to best showcase your pieces once hung. A well-framed artwork deserves perfect lighting to shine brightly and for years to come.
